Offering hope and support this Winter

27/10/2021

It Takes a City has secured government funding to provide safe, secure accommodation for those Cambridge rough sleepers at risk during the coming Winter. The project again demonstrates the positive, lasting changes that can be achieved when communities come together in mutual aid.

During the winter of 2020/21, we were a key operating partner at Masters House for those being accommodated under the “Everyone In” initiative, and as emergency accommodation for those on the streets during extreme weather. We called upon our network of volunteers to coordinate meals, laundry, practical help, pastoral care, and resettlement support.

Masters House demonstrated the power of partnerships and how positive outcomes can be achieved for those on the journey from street to home. The new funding provides an opportunity to try a different approach to the ‘communal floors’ model operated in previous years under SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol).

“This pilot project marks a significant step-up in the level and quality of winter provision for Cambridge rough sleepers.  Building on last year’s successful ‘Everyone In’ campaign which saw all Cambridge rough sleepers offered a place where they can be safe from Covid, the project will run continuously throughout the Winter, providing all guests with a safe and warm room of their own.  The Council is pleased to be working with It Takes a City and other partners.”

“This pilot project marks a significant step-up in the level and quality of winter provision for Cambridge rough sleepers.”

Cambridge City Council and It Takes a City have worked together to secure the lease on a suitable property, and It Takes a City has secured funding from the Homelessness Winter Transformation Fund 2021/22, supported by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities, Housing Justice and Homeless Link. This funding, alongside existing City Council resources, will enable the new facility to open from November through to the end of March 2022.

The property is in a convenient location and will operate on a 24/7 basis throughout the Winter. It includes 20 en-suite rooms, a 2-bed flat, large kitchen/dining area, laundry room and a secure courtyard. It Takes a City will focus on providing welfare, resettlement support, practical help, and meals, working with partner organisations as before.

We are incredibly grateful to CATS Global Schools for making the property available to us, as they did for Masters House.

“It Takes a City is delighted to work once again with Cambridge City Council to provide additional capacity for rough sleepers during the coming winter. Building on the partnerships established in the “Everyone In” project from March 2020, our aim is not just to keep people safe but to help them move on into the right accommodation, so that everyone has somewhere to call home.”
